Whats The #1 Wild Animal We Deal With? RATS!
Rats are in the rodent family and are very prolific breeders. Under perfect conditions, rats can have their young as common as every 3-4 weeks and typically 8-12 babies per litter! So, it makes it very easy for rats to populate an area. Once rats reach their carrying capacity, part of that population will have no choice but to find a new territory. Rats are commensal which means they are dependent on us humans to survive. Rats thrive in urban areas because there are more areas for them to safely nest away from predators. The typical call we get is; "I'm hearing scratching in my attic or crawl space". We then find entry points where rats can get in to the structure, locate damage left behind, and create a plan to get rid of the rats. Step 1 is to seal all of the entry points except for the main entry point. The main entry point is the main opening on the structure rodents are using to get in and out on a daily basis. This area can easily be located by looking for chew marks, hair, rub marks, urine, and feces. After all of the entry points are sealed with animal proof material, we install a wildlife excluder on the main entry point that allows the rats to exit, but not return. Step 2 is to speed up the removal process, by setting traps where the rats are living. These traps should be checked one to 2 times per week depending on what the outside temperature is. When its hot, dead rats will decompose quickly, leaving a horrible dead animal odor which can leak into the house from the attic, so it's important to check traps at least a couple times per week. With cooler temperatures, check traps a couple times per week is sufficient. Checking traps too often may make rats trap shy and they will start eluding the areas you set traps. Step 3 is performed after all of the rats are gone. We evaluate the damage and begin restoring insulation, removing rodent feces, and disinfecting the attic. Rats can carry many types of diseases and it is very important that the areas they were living in are treated thoroughly with a disinfectant & deodorizer. Not only is the deodorizer important to get rid of unpleasant smells, but other odors we may not even be able to smell can attract other unwanted wildlife. Wild animals release pheromones that can stay in an attic or crawl space for quite some time. Not removing the pheromones will increase the likeliness of a nuisance wildlife recurrence. Even if holes are sealed, it's still possible animals may try to chew their way in because the smell of animal pheromones within tell them it's a good place to be.
